B&J Auto Center - Tips & Tricks To Keep You On The Road

By Bill Gurien 09 Jan, 2017
1. Oil Change - This one should be a no brainer.  Your car needs regular oil changes to prolong the life of your engine.  Most manufacturers of newer cars now recommend every 5000 to 7500 miles, but check your owners manual if you aren't sure.

2. Coolant Flush - Most manufacturers recommend a routine coolant flush every 40,000 miles.  Again, check your owners manual if you aren't sure.  A properly maintained coolant system can offer freeze protection, over heating protection and improve your heater efficiency.
3. Transmission Flush - This one varies widely based on the age and manufacturer of your car.  Regardless, as your car ages it is wise to have your transmission fluid checked occasionally.  We recommend starting inspections around 50-60k miles.  It may not need replacing, but it's always wise to check.

4. Regular Lubrication - Moving parts need lubrication.  Your car definitely qualifies.  Of course, not all cars are made the same these days, so check with your mechanic to find out what, if anything needs regular grease on your car.   Other areas of your car that are often overlooked for lubing include your gas cap door, hood and door hinges and other metal to metal joints.

5. Brake Service - Most people don't know their brakes need service until they can hear the squeaking or grinding.  It is important to get your brakes serviced as soon as you can after symptoms appear.  Ignoring those signs can lead to much more costly repairs to your brake system.

6. Clean It - Keeping your car clean from dirt, road debris, and winter salt can definitely make your car LOOK better, but it will also help to keep rust away and preserve the finish on your car.  A good wax twice a year is also a good recommendation.

7. Don't Ignore The Check Engine Light - It's there for a reason, and it doesn't always mean the worst is wrong with your vehicle.  Depending on your car, it could mean anything from low tire pressure or an open gas cap, all the way up to engine trouble.  Check your owners manual to get a better understanding of your dash readout, and get your car checked out when the light comes on.

8. Keep Checks On Fluid Levels & Tire Pressure - It's a good idea to check your fluid levels at every oil change, and if your comfortable doing it, once a month is better.  Check your oil level, washer fluid, and coolant levels.  Low levels could indicate service is needed.  Keep an eye on your tire pressure also.  The recommended pressure for your tires is usually listed on the inside of your door panel.

9. Use The Right Engine Oil For Your Car - Unless your changing your own oil and know what you're doing, it may not be obvious which motor oil to use.  Not all engines are the same and can call for any one of a wide variety of motor oils from standard conventional oil up to synthetic blends.  Your owners manual will be able to tell you what the recommended oil is for your particular vehicle.

10. Check The Battery - Being stranded due to a dead battery can really ruin your day.  Fortunately, this scenario can be avoided with a few simple regular inspections.  It's a good idea once a month to visually inspect your battery and look for signs of corrosion around the posts.  Also check for cracked casing or frayed cables, and any type of leak.  Any of these symptoms usually point toward a needed replacement.  If you start to notice slow or sluggish engine cranking, you should have your battery checked immediately to determine if it is the cause.

Transmission repairs can be a costly expense.   A little regular maintenance can go a long way in prolonging the life of your transmission and saving you big money on those repairs.  A little sludge buildup is normal, but ignoring your recommended maintenance schedule can cause headaches down the road.  Most manufacturers recommend transmission maintenance every 30k miles, but that can vary depending on your own driving habits and requirements.  If you haven't had maintenance done in a while, or never, it might be a good idea to see where you stand.

It's that time of year again.  Winter.  Is your car ready?  Winterizing your car ensures your car will get you where you need to go regardless of a little ice and snow.  Anti-freeze, wiper fluids, battery and tires all need a good inspection before the winter weather catches you off guard.  Call us today and schedule your winterizing service!
